hCG is a hormone naturally produced in the body of both men and women. It is commonly known as the “pregnancy hormone.” In pregnant women, this hormone allows the body to metabolize fat and use it as energy for both mother and fetus. This acts as a “fail-safe” mechanism when energy is needed immediately. hCG also regulates the hypothalamus of the brain which controls hunger, metabolism and fat breakdown.
Women may experience extremely high levels of hCG during pregnancy with no adverse affects. Additionally you learn how to eat right and have proper portion control during the diet and beyond. With medical supervision, we have found very little, if no, adverse side effects during a patient’s time on the hCG diet.
Patients usually see anywhere between half and pound to one pound daily in weight loss while actively taking hCG injections. Patients who have large amounts of weight to lose may see more loss, and men tend to lose more on average than women.
Prescription hCG is usually pure pharmaceutical grade hCG with no supporting elements added. Prescription hCG can be very effective but must be obtained and monitored only by a licensed medical physician, as with any prescription. Pure hCG is usually administered by injection only. Non-prescription homeopathic hCG, often purchased over the Internet, uses extremely dilute amounts of hCG and is not suitable for a restricted 500 calorie diet.
The hCG hormone is naturally present in men. It is found in every human tissue, including males, pregnant women, and non-pregnant women. Men do very well with this type of program, often losing twice the amount of weight as women.
It is true that normally when cutting back on calories and fat, our bodies can store fat and our metabolism can slow down. This happens because fat is really a life-saving source of stored energy. As theorized, when a low calorie diet is used in conjunction with hCG, it is suggested to the body to use stored fat for energy, and eliminate excess fat reserves. It is a natural process, so there should be no ill effects on your metabolism. The plan is formulated to keep the body from going into starvation mode and holding onto fat as it resets your metabolism.
It is common to feel mild hunger during the first few days. This will pass and by the second week you will find your servings to be satisfying. Drinking lots of green tea during the day (we like the cold, fruity sweet tea sweetened with stevia) helps as a natural appetite suppressant and can increase your energy level. Overall, most people report that they have plenty of energy and feel good while on the program.
What about birth control pills or Depo-Provera injections? hCG should not interact with any medications, including birth control pills or Depo-Provera.
If you are pregnant or become pregnant during the hCG diet, stop the weight loss plan and consult your physician. hCG injections do not increase your ability to become pregnant or make your contraceptive less effective. Small changes in menstrual cycle have been noted during times of weight loss but stabilize as weight stabilizes.
No you don’t ever want to skip any of your meals. Its important to eat all of your calories and especially your protein so that you only lose fat and not muscle.
It is recommended to patients to only do low key exercise, such as walking for 30 minutes daily, if they have not been recently engaging in an exercise routine. We do customize the plan based on our patient’s recent exercise routine, and find that those who have already been excercising may continue to do so at their usual pace.
It is recommended to purchase a potassium/magnesium combination to take during the diet to aid in issue with cramping or constipation, as well as aid in energy. Digestive enzymes have also been found to be helpful in aiding weight loss during the diet plan. Biotin (5-10mg/daily) is recommended as, with any rapid weight loss plan, hair loss can occur.
The first week, may patients are “detoxing” off carbohydrates, sugars, sodas, etc. and can experience mild headaches. Patients may take ibuprofen or aspirin tablets if needed.
Patients can remain on the diet plan for a total of 40 injections. After this, they must transition into Phase 2 which is a weight stabilization phase. After they have completed 3 weeks of Phase 2, they may return to Phase 1 of actively taking hCG injections for another 40 injections if desiring to lose more weight.
It is recommended that the daily meals be split up so that patients can “graze” during the day. For example: a piece of fruit for breakfast, a protein and vegetable for lunch, melba toast as a snack, protein and vegetable for dinner, followed by their last piece of melba toast and fruit.
Alcohol is not allowed on Phase 1 of the diet and can result in stalls and lack of weight loss. Certain types of alcohol are allowed on Phase 2 and will be discussed.
Lotions and moisturizers are to be avoided, as they can result in weight loss stalls. It is recommended that mineral oil (baby oil) be used in place for dry skin issues. We have found that other makeup does not significantly impact weight loss and is taken on a case by case basis.
Like any diet program, hCG is not a “miracle” plan. Weight regain may occur if lifestyle choices are not altered and certain foods are not consumed in moderation. We work together with you to figure out how to keep the weight off. Phase 2 which consists of a low carbohydrate, low sugar diet for 3 weeks aids in resetting the metabolism to ease patients back into a regular eating plan. We strive to help all of our patients be as successful in their weight loss as possible and have enjoyed seeing many patients reach their weight loss and life goals.
